This event was held by Clark Hill Thorp Reed who is welcoming a new identity. Jeff and Ron were invited to attend this event so the firm could show their appreciation to them as well as their other clients and colleagues. Along with showing their appreciation, they wanted to kick off summer by connecting Thorp Reed contacts with the new Clark Hill Colleagues. While they were there, they got to meet up with Marty Dorfner, Managing Director at Resources Global Professionals, and J. Bianchin SVP, Senior Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo Bank. Overall it was a great networking event for Jeff and Ron. After the event, they stopped over at Cioppino’s for some cigars and relaxation. For pictures, check out the ABG Capital Facebook page!

Just another Friday at ABG

Life at ABG Capital has been pretty good this week! We started a new office initiative that involves getting away from your desk and we closed out the week with some golf.

Our newest office initiative is designed to boost productivity and get people away from their desks. No, you didn’t read that wrong, studies have proven that leaving your desk for short periods of time will give your body the ‘recharge’ it needs to make it through the day without feeling stressed or overwhelmed. We’re calling our new program “Tend to You at 10 and 2”. We’ll be asking all of our employees to get up from their desks for 10-15 minutes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and go do something. We are encouraging employees to bring in their own things like hacky sacks, basketballs, baseballs and mitts to add to the Frisbees, footballs, and other sports equipment ABG Capital will provide. We’ll be walking some laps around the lake, stretching our muscles with gentle yoga poses and becoming a fitter crew while recharging our brains! We’re officially kicking off this initiative next week so stay tuned for details on how it goes.

ABG Capital has gone golfing

Jeff, Ron and Ben Witsberger

Lastly, Jeff Tapolci and Ron Eggert have been out of the office playing in golf outings yesterday and today. Yesterday they were at the ACG outing with Sean Andreas from Wells Fargo and Justin Bertram from Incline Equity Partners.  They took 3rd place! Great job guys! Sean joined them again today in the Wells Fargo outing and Ben Witsberger, also from Wells Fargo, was there as well. For more pictures of their golfing adventures, check out our Facebook page.

That’s all we have for you today folks, have a great weekend!

Just another Friday at ABG

How was your week? We’re excited to be ending another great one here at ABG Capital! The biggest thing that we had going on this week was our Month End Meeting. All the employees gathered around and got to hear the latest ABG Capital news.

We recognized our Employee of the Month, Terri Sams, who works for Inspira. She was nominated by Nate Rupp and Ryan Rice for her exceptional work. We recognized two VoIP Innovations employees, Justin Cornish and Randy Stegner, as honorable mentions for all the hard work they’ve been putting in. We also have to mention Eric Butler and Dustin Campbell, from VoIP Innovations, because they received some pretty awesome feedback from a customer. Caricatures of them are now hanging on our ‘Atta Boy board.

At this meeting, Jeff Tapolci, CEO of ABG Capital, announced that profit sharing has officially been approved by the Board of Directors! This is great news for all of the ABG Capital employees because they’ll be able to get some extra cash in their pockets at the end of the year. Profit sharing was something that’s been on everyone’s minds for a long time now and we’re excited to see that it’s actually happening!

Now that we got all that good news out of the way, it’s time to get down to business! We’ve recently entered the Social Madness competition organized by The Business Journals. It’s a competition that measures the amount of social engagement you have with your fans and followers, not the growth of your network. The local competition kicks off this Monday, June 3, and the winners will be announced on July 9. From that point, the winners from each size category will move on to the national competition, which starts on July 16, and then the entire competition ends on August 20.

This is a competition that involves everyone and we need YOUR help to make sure we move on to the national round and win for our category. As a winner, we would receive a national editorial write up and have $10,000 donated to a charity of our choice. This competition is not about seeing how many likes we can get in the time frame; it’s about your engagement with our sites. That means liking, commenting and sharing the things we post. Show us some love people! The competition will focus on our FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and Google+ pages. Even though the competition only covers these four sites, we’re also on Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram and Vine (search for ABG Capital).

I planned on the Social Madness explanation being the last part of this ‘Just another Friday’ post, but I couldn’t resist sharing this picture with you. Our air conditioning unit is right above Ian Hambleton’s desk. He comes in later in the day and it wasn’t too long after he got here that he realized there was a problem… Water was leaking right onto his desk! He grabbed some bowls and is STILL waiting for the dripping to stop so he can get to work. Good luck Ian!

Jeff and Ron were invited by Kieran O’Dea, from Alpern Rosenthal, to spend time outside of the ABG Capital office doing some networking at a Pittsburgh Pirates game. Kieran is currently a shareholder in the Audit and Assurance Department and he specializes on privately-held manufacturing, distribution and service companies.

Kieran didn’t intend for this to be any sort of formal networking event; he wanted to invite a few colleagues and enjoy the ball game. Among the invitees were lawyers, bankers, PE guys and a few other people from his firm who all enjoyed getting to know each other in the casual setting. They even ended the night with a great win for the Pirates!

WHAT: Wells Fargo Health Care Reform Event

WHERE: Chartiers Country Club

WHEN: Thursday May 30, 2013

20130530_Wells Fargo Health Care Speaker

Jeff got a picture of Michael Schenk in action!

You may or may not be aware that we are in the midst of a nationwide health care reform. Many things will be changing in the coming months and it’s going to affect organizations and the health care plans they provide to their employees. Jeff and Sharon, our HR Manager, were invited by Sean Andreas, our Insurance Rep, and Ben Witsberger, our Business Banker who are both from Wells Fargo. The event was called, “Health Care Reform: Strategic solutions to address the play or pay mandate,” and featured Michael Schenk, a Benefits Compliance Consultant at Wells Fargo.

Michael talks about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its effects on employer-provided health plans. The main topics that he covered in his presentation were the provisions going into effect next year and their impact on employers and group help plans, what strategies can minimize the financial impacts of the ACA and how to maintain a legally compliant program that is still competitive enough to attract and retain top employees. Jeff and Sharon attended this event so they can be better resources for their employees who may have questions on how the health care reform will affect them.

Around Town with Jeff

WHO: Jeff Tapolci and Jim Hoffman

WHAT: One-on-one coaching session

WHERE: The better question is where weren’t they!

WHEN: Wednesday May 22, 2013

There were two goals set for this day: 1. Gain business knowledge and tips. 2. Learn how to pick out the perfect shotgun for shooting sporting clays. It’s safe to say that both of these goals were accomplished in the day that Jeff and Jim spent together.

They started their day at Jeff’s house and then made their way to Cabela’s. The long drive gave them the opportunity to really talk about any issues, questions, or new techniques that could be helpful for the entire organization. This is similar to what all the managers at ABG Capital do with their employees: they meet once a month to discuss the things they’re doing well and the things they need to work on. After all, CEO’s even need some coaching once in a while!

Once the guys made it to Cabela’s it was time to put the business talk on hold and get down to the fun stuff. Jim knows a ton when it comes to shotguns and shooting and Jeff is a novice. In their last meeting, they talked about having a lesson on skeet and clay shooting and that day was almost here.  They spent some quality time finding the gun the fit Jeff perfectly and then they loaded up with plenty of ammo. Once they had all they needed from Cabela’s, it was time to grab some lunch at Cheddar’s. After lunch they met up with Ron Eggert at Bistecca at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino where they enjoyed some cigars and cocktails.

Despite the excitement of picking out the perfect gun and enjoying a relaxing evening, the day revolved around coaching, brainstorming, solving problems and some good old fashioned male bonding time. The great thing about these guys is that they never forgot that these kind of meetings need to be fun too and they always remember their motto, “Always have fun while training.” That’s a pretty good motto for anyone to keep in mind!

They always make sure these coaching sessions are out of the office so everyone is free of their normal daily distractions. It’s a great way to stay relaxed and keep a clear head while learning new things for the organization. The new tactics and information they learn can be brought back to other organization leaders and ultimately help to meet more goals of the entire organization.

WHO: Jeff Tapolci, Ron Eggert, Jim Hoffman, Justin McNeil

WHAT: Group coaching sessions

WHERE: Millvale Sportsman Club

WHEN: Thursday May 23, 2013

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression four heads are better than one, but the meeting Jeff had with Jim, Ron, and Justin brought more life to it. Justin McNeil, owner of McNeil Industries, is a friend of Jeff’s and comes in from Cleveland on a regular basis to meet with Jim and also with Jeff. Today he was joining them for a day filled with more business talk and lessons on skeet and clay shooting.

You have to understand that when Jeff gets together with Jim the things he learns go far beyond the business realm. Jim talks about guns, golf, hunting, and fishing but he always manages to teach Jeff important business and life lessons.

The guys met up at the Millvale Sportsman Club and swapped stories of different things they’ve been through throughout their time in business. They asked questions and got advice and it was a great day spent with great company. They all learned some very important business and life lessons while also learning the fundamentals of skeet and clay shooting. Jeff was thrilled because the day was finally here where he could shoot his own gun! Other than the business talk and gun shooting, Justin picked up another valuable life lesson; how to change a flat tire.

ABG Capital Flat TireRon and Jim have been around the block a little longer than Jeff and Justin and they remember when flat tires were happening all the time. Jeff had just encountered his first flat a few months ago and this was Justin’s first. The guys noticed the flat but figured they would change it later and continued their day. You would think that with the ‘four heads are better than one’ theory on their side they would have just changed it then, but they didn’t. Before they knew it, they were regretting their decision to wait because it started to rain. They did however work as a team to figure out how to get the spare tire off the rack but after a few phone calls, they were able to get the flat tire repaired without taking it off completely. That’s lucky!

All in all they had some great coaching sessions and ended their day Jergels with some dinner and drinks. Everyone learned some new techniques to bring back to the office, or the shooting range, and they had fun doing it.

Just another Friday at ABG Capital

We had a pretty calm week here at ABG Capital. The most exciting news we have is that our triangle logo has official been trademarked! We’ve been waiting for months for this to get approved and it finally happened. To read more about our trademark and trademarks in general, check out our blog post about us getting our official trademark.

ABG Capital Volunteering TeamOn Monday this week we also posted a recap blog article about our volunteering experience at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. We had such a great time there and it was a great opportunity to give back to our community. We even got a special thanks from some veterans who stopped by.

As I wrap this post up, I just want to remind everyone that it’s a three day weekend (like you need reminding :)) I hope the weather is nice and you have a great Memorial Day!

ABG Capital Volunteers at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies

Happy Monday! As you remember from our Just another Friday at ABG post last week, we mentioned that some people in the ABG Capital office were taking a half day to go do some volunteer work. That volunteer work took place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies where we were equipped with buckets of waters and sponges to clean thousands of headstones. Our mission was to help the cemetery prepare for their Memorial Day celebrations next weekend. We had a gorgeous sunny day on our side and we were able to get through all the headstones we needed to.

This is the second year ABG Capital has volunteered at the cemetery and we hope to do it again next year because it’s such a rewarding experience. We were even approached by some veterans who wanted to offer their thanks to US! If you’d like to see pictures from our day, please visit our Facebook page.

ABG Capital CEO and Veterans

Jeff Tapolci and Veterans

The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is a national cemetery that serves as the final resting place for thousands of veterans and their families. The cemetery lies on 292 acres and is a beautiful place that is well taken care of by a staff of no more than 20. If you are interested in being a part of the volunteer program at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, please contact their office for more information.

Just another Friday at ABG

It was a pretty nice week for us at ABG Capital, how was yours? Our Executive Team spent most of the week planning and strategizing ways that they can implement the things they learned from the Leadership summit. They got tons of great information from the summit and now their biggest challenge is sifting through it all to figure out what can work best for their departments and their teams.

ABG Capital Tech Meeting

Yesterday there was a VM and SAN Technical Demo meeting where members of our staff got together to discuss all things technical. From the name of this meeting, you would think that it would be filled with technical lingo and tutorials that introduced our staff to a whole wealth of technical information. From my perspective as the Communications Specialist, it seemed like this meeting revolved more around this:

Why computers seem female:

  • No one but the Creator understands their internal logic.
  • The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
  • The message “Bad command or file name” is about as informative as, “If you don’t know why I’m mad at you, then I’m certainly not going to tell you.”
  • Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.
  • As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories.

As you know, today is Friday and that means another great lunch for the ABG Capital employees. Today is also the day where one of our lunch committees had to prepare the lunch for us. This month’s committee was made up of Heather Halpern, Lowell Smith, Bobby Taylor, and Paul Frye who have decided to whip us up some meatball hoagies!

Today is also the day when we’re taking a half day so we can do some volunteer work at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. We’ll be cleaning headstones in order to help make everything look nice for their Memorial Day celebrations. I’ll be taking pictures and videos along the way so make sure you’re keeping up with us on Facebook!

I also wanted throw in another Around Town with Jeff post today since he was at an event last night.

The Geese of ABG Capital

The Geese of ABG CapitalWhen we wrote last week, we were telling you about the sound system that was installed that would play the sounds of a shotgun, distressed geese, and coyotes every 10-15 minutes to scare away the ducks. This week, we’re going to tell you how that didn’t work. It wasn’t long before these geese figured out our little charade. They kept coming back and getting closer and closer. Eventually they realized that there was no Elmer Fudd hiding in the bushes waiting for them and they resettled back into their home. After a while, our geese were comfortable with the sounds and they wouldn’t even flinch when it went off. On the other hand, we noticed another group of geese eyeing up the pond. Since they weren’t accustomed to the sounds they would fly off and never be seen again. It was comical to us because we realized that our geese were using those sounds as their own form of a home security system!

These geese are here to stay. They have made this place their home just like we have and they plan on staying here no matter what we throw at them. Whether it’s the good times or the bad times, our office wouldn’t be the same without them. We remember watching them learn to fly and saving them from Fight Clubs gone wrong and then we remember the other things that happen AFTER they grow up. The constant games of chicken between goose and car, running around and chasing them through the parking lot trying to get them to move out of the way, stepping in their crap, and the everlasting screaming battles between us and them.

We live with these geese every day and maybe that’s why we have such a love hate relationship them. You don’t always get along with the person/people you live with, right? That’s the same situation we go through with these geese. It all goes back to seeing those baby geese take their first steps and watching them learn to fly. It makes everything else worth it. Even if you don’t like the cute baby geese, you still might end up with an interesting story that goes something like this, “so I was leaving for work today and you wouldn’t believe what happened with this goose!”

As we bring this post to a close, we want to mention that it is that time of year when the geese are laying eggs. It’s bringing anticipation for the cuteness, but also concern for our legs and umbrellas as we fear the angry mother geese that we might run into. We’ll continue to write and take pictures and videos to keep you updated with the Geese of ABG Capital.
